That was not especially helpful advice from your doctor.

I found that much more than half an hour or so of running on a treadmill would bother my knees and hips. I much prefer running outdoors. What kind of surface do you usually run on? Blacktop is better than concrete... and dirt or grass is better than blacktop. Also, running shoes don't last forever. I usually figure that running costs me twenty-five cents a mile but I get a "free" pair of shoes for everyday wear after they've outlived their safe & comfortable running life. That's at 100 bucks for a pair of shoes and about 400 miles of running. (I've seen people recommend variously 350 to 550 miles of running per pair of shoes.)

I've got a 5K coming on Sunday and I am so not ready for it.
I get about 200-250 miles to a pair of shoes, but I think that's because I have a short stride. I'm only about 5'3", so I take many more steps per mile. I don't mind buying new ones.

If I get to run outside, I run a combo of blacktop, sidewalk, and grass. I always feel great after running outside. Treadmill bothers me a lot more. I think my stride gets off on a treadmill too.

Plus I'm faster on average outside.
Hip + knee => could be an IT band issue. Was your doctor able to actually diagnose anything? I would try to get a referral to an orthopedist, preferably one who specializes in sports medicine, or who is a runner. He/she will better understand that the "don't run" suggestion is not going to work with most runners and will only say this when it is absolutely necessary.
