Non-holiday holiday music
Today's Holidailies prompt: "What non-holiday song reminds you of winter or the holiday season, and why?"
The first song that popped into my head, of course, was Joni Mitchell's River. But I think that's a clear link, as it ends with instrumental Christmas music at the end. So after a bit of thought, I decided that the non-holiday song that reminds me most of the holidays is Simple Gifts, the old Shaker song. For the past... oh, at least 10 years, I have played in a brass choir at Christmas Eve mass, and one year, we decided to add a new song, a brass arrangement of Simple Gifts. I think we only played it the one year because there were so many beautiful Christmas songs we could be playing instead, but it has always been one of my favorite melodies, and I absolutely loved it as performed by a brass choir.
Even though I've moved half a country away, I am hoping to still play in the brass choir this year. It will be bittersweet, though, as the woman who initially organized us and then coordinated the event every year passed away this summer, rather suddenly. Last I heard, there were people trying to pull together the choir for at least one more year, kind of as a tribute to Mary and all she did for us. I truly hope it works out. If I were home, I would be trying to work to pull the group together. It's a wonderful evening and it's fun to get a chance to play. And I think Mary deserves our tribute.
