Things have gotten a little crazy around here lately with work and with the cold that just won't quit. I don't remember the last time I was this sick. Two weeks ago, I came down with a cold, spent two days unable to move, had an evil cough for a week, and continue to have a slight annoying cough. I keep getting told "You should have gotten a flu shot!" But I never once had a fever, chills, body ache, any of that. I was exhausted and congested, but none of the other symptoms. That tells me it wasn't the flu.
I'm feeling better, though still coughing a bit. It's killed my training for the Cherry Blossom ten-miler. I was doing 6 and 7 mile runs, and now I fight to get through a 3 mile run. The Cherry Blossom race has a time limit, which has me a little bit scared, but it's enough that even if I have to walk part of it, I will still make it fine. I just can't walk a lot of it!
Work is work. I'm not going to say much about it, but it has been a source of quite a bit of stress lately. I just remind myself it's only a job - it's not my life.
So that's where things are now. Bad Movie Day occurred a few weeks back - I should put up reviews of the super sweet movies we watched.
So my intent to post more often has not gone so well. I blame my life for being boring.
This past weekend, I decided to audition for the Cathedral Choral Society, and they let me in! Crazy talk, I tell you. So my first rehearsal is tomorrow. I'm pretty excited, but it's going to make for a very long Monday. No real break from about 7am til 10pm.
This weekend, I think I finished the shopping and preparations for Bad Movie Day, which I am hosting this coming weekend. BMD is a weekend of terrible movies, alcohol and bad food, and fun with college friends. I promise to review the movies like I did last year. If I can make it through all of them. Eeek. But it will be nice to have everyone together. Since I moved, I have had the chance to see more of my college friends, just because I am so much closer to Marie and Mary Beth, but it's been a year since I saw a lot of the girls, so it will be good to see everyone.
And now I am off to cook dinner. Mmm, dinner.
A quick little recap of my weekend, the weekend of Bad Movie Day IX.
I get into Columbia around 2. Before the storms start. Susan is delighted to see me and we go to Wal-Mart, where we buy lots of Boone's. We go to Susan's mom's house for dinner, and Susan's husband Matt shows up, having picked up Molly and Mary Beth at the Kansas City airport. Susan and I hide in the bathroom and scare Molly when she walks in. The tomfoolery has begun.
Betsy makes it to Kansas City. Then Mary Kate calls. Her flight from LA diverted to Indianapolis, and she won't get in til 4:00 on Saturday Then Marie and Tim arrive in Kansas City. Betsy, Marie, and Tim decide to stay there and drive to Columbia on Saturday, which is probably the best plan.
Saturday, the three show up. We go to the Chinese Buffet, because it is awesome. And Jenn and Jason meet us there. Perfect timing. We eat and laugh and go to Michael's to buy t-shirts for the weekend. Because we must always make t-shirts to commemorate BMD. And while there, we find out that Mary Kate's flight is again cancelled, and she is just going to try to get back to LA. We are sad.
We watch some warm-up movies for BMD. Bring It On Again and The Blue Lagoon. Both amazing compared to what faces us on Sunday.
Sunday morning arrives. And the movies begin.
Next up was Cobra. Sylvester Stallone. Has to be good, right? Wrong. This is Bad Movie Day, people. The tagline on the box is "Crime is a disease. Meet the cure." A version of that line was actually spoken in the movie. Terribly bad. And we were also disturbed by Brigitte Nielson modeling with robots. It was never, ever explained.
"How'd they get through the roof?"
"Through the plot hole."
Next was an amazing masterpiece called "Uninvited." It's so amazing you can't even buy it on Amazon. The basic plot: Somehow, genetic testing creates a cat-like monster that lives inside an ordinary housecat. The housecat is picked up by a girl on spring break, who randomly meets a rich old dude in Florida and she and her friends decide to cruise to the Bahamas on his yacht. And then the cat inside the cat starts killing everyone. It was amazing.
This movie is apparently some sort of a cult hit. And yet, I'm not sure why. I suppose it was entertaining. And there were lots of naked breasts in the first three minutes. But really? The conflict between cannibal women who eat men with guacamole and those who eat men with clam dip? And the uncharted jungle in southern California? Wait, why am I looking for logic in anything we watch for BMD?
And by this point in time, we had been watching movies for nearly 16 hours. We were tired and sore from all the laying around. BMD is hard on the body, I tell you. I am still recovering.
So life kind of exploded because I am planning a symposium, and I was apparently supposed to do all these things that no one ever mentioned me doing, so whoops. Anyway, that's not fun to talk about.
Things that are fun to talk about are MY BIRTHDAY! I went to lunch with my family, which was fun and delicious, and I got a pedicure. I now have little white flowers painted on my toenails, and I love it. I got a bunch of great gifts, mostly kitchen stuff. Apparently, I have to do more cooking now. Which actually is a good thing. Anyone know of any healthy slow cooker recipies?
Tomorrow, I'm leaving for Columbia MO for Bad Movie Day. This started when we were in college. We always had Thursday and Friday before finals set aside as reading days, so the Thursday would be used for Bad Movie Day. 12 straight hours of the worst movies possible. We're talking terrible, horrible, awful movies. And we sit around in PJ pants and laugh and eat and get drunk and mock the movies and just have a good time. We kind of kept it up after graduation, though I've only been able to go to one other one. I love my friends, but I can't afford a $300 plane ticket to go watch movies for the weekend. This one's at my friend Susan's house though, and she lives maybe 2 hours from here, so it's an easy drive for me.
So I'm going tomorrow, and then four of us are going to Susan's mom's house for dinner, and then the rest of them (four girls, two boyfriends) will be in around midnight, when a power hour will commence (which I will not participate in) and then I believe Saturday is for movies, Sunday is for recovery and fun, and Monday is for going home.
It's really a great time, and it's fun that boyfriends and husbands just sort of get included. It's our test to see if they'll fit in. No one new this time, Susan's husband, and the two boyfriends have participated before. And they go do manly things like watch sports to get away from the house of girls. It's really kind of a hilarious weekend. Last time, apparently the only way to make one of the movies palatable was to take a bottle of Boones Farm Lemonade flavored malt beverage and pour tequila in it. Nothing like a little alcohol in your alcohol. I'm definitely excited to see everyone again.
I may have pictures when I return. Or I may not - they may be to embarassing to share.
