A quick little recap of my weekend, the weekend of Bad Movie Day IX.
I get into Columbia around 2. Before the storms start. Susan is delighted to see me and we go to Wal-Mart, where we buy lots of Boone's. We go to Susan's mom's house for dinner, and Susan's husband Matt shows up, having picked up Molly and Mary Beth at the Kansas City airport. Susan and I hide in the bathroom and scare Molly when she walks in. The tomfoolery has begun.
Betsy makes it to Kansas City. Then Mary Kate calls. Her flight from LA diverted to Indianapolis, and she won't get in til 4:00 on Saturday Then Marie and Tim arrive in Kansas City. Betsy, Marie, and Tim decide to stay there and drive to Columbia on Saturday, which is probably the best plan.
Saturday, the three show up. We go to the Chinese Buffet, because it is awesome. And Jenn and Jason meet us there. Perfect timing. We eat and laugh and go to Michael's to buy t-shirts for the weekend. Because we must always make t-shirts to commemorate BMD. And while there, we find out that Mary Kate's flight is again cancelled, and she is just going to try to get back to LA. We are sad.
We watch some warm-up movies for BMD. Bring It On Again and The Blue Lagoon. Both amazing compared to what faces us on Sunday.
Sunday morning arrives. And the movies begin.
Next up was Cobra. Sylvester Stallone. Has to be good, right? Wrong. This is Bad Movie Day, people. The tagline on the box is "Crime is a disease. Meet the cure." A version of that line was actually spoken in the movie. Terribly bad. And we were also disturbed by Brigitte Nielson modeling with robots. It was never, ever explained.
"How'd they get through the roof?"
"Through the plot hole."
Next was an amazing masterpiece called "Uninvited." It's so amazing you can't even buy it on Amazon. The basic plot: Somehow, genetic testing creates a cat-like monster that lives inside an ordinary housecat. The housecat is picked up by a girl on spring break, who randomly meets a rich old dude in Florida and she and her friends decide to cruise to the Bahamas on his yacht. And then the cat inside the cat starts killing everyone. It was amazing.
This movie is apparently some sort of a cult hit. And yet, I'm not sure why. I suppose it was entertaining. And there were lots of naked breasts in the first three minutes. But really? The conflict between cannibal women who eat men with guacamole and those who eat men with clam dip? And the uncharted jungle in southern California? Wait, why am I looking for logic in anything we watch for BMD?
And by this point in time, we had been watching movies for nearly 16 hours. We were tired and sore from all the laying around. BMD is hard on the body, I tell you. I am still recovering.
Holidailies prompt: "Movies you enjoy watching most this month"
I think the movie I absolutely must watch during the Christmas season is The Muppet Christmas Carol. I've been a huge fan of the Muppets for as long as I can remember (thank to my parents), and I absolutely adore this movie. Humor, laughter, tears... brilliant. And Gonzo and Rizzo narrating the whole thing. How can it be bad?
I usually try to watch It's a Wonderful Life once a year, but it doesn't always happen. And I inevitably catch A Christmas Story about twelve times during Christmas, just because it airs for 24 straight hours. Which always seems like a ridiculous idea, but really is just brilliant programming.
I really like the old verson of Miracle on 34th Street. I should buy a copy of that someday. It's such a great story and so well done.
I had plans! Took a final on Tuesday, took Tuesday night from studying, then two solid days of studying for this last final, then done! Plans! Good plans!
Then I got food poisoning and didn't move from the couch yesterday. I did, however, watch Casablanca, Newsies, and multiple baby/birthing stories on TLC. Those things make me never want to have kids. Or maybe just never have it filmed. One or the other.
In another back Holidailies prompt, they asked "What's the one food it simply wouldn't be [your winter holiday of choice] without?" (Oh yeah, catching up on Holidailies? Also not going to happen. If I'm not careful, I'm gonna get kicked out.) I'm assuming the holiday mentioned is Christmas, but I can't think of any particular Christmas food that we always have. It varies every year, which is nice. If you would like something specific, a request can be made and you just might get it. But Thanksgiving means Grandma's dressing. It's amazing. I don't know what it is about it, but it's just incredible. So delicious (thankfully there is no organ meat in it anymore, at which point, it was not delicious but gross and who eats that stuff?). My mom has taken over the job of cooking it, and thankfully, it's not just a Grandma thing - Mom can make it just as good. Mmm... dressing. I believe I ate the leftovers of that for breakfast the day after Thanksgiving.
And now, many hours of studying, and maybe another catch-up entry tonight.
What movie can you quote by heart?
Submitted by clamhead.
It's been a while since I watched it. I should get to that.
Actual post content coming soon. Painted and cleaned all weekend. And watched some football. Go Irish!
Who's your favorite movie villain?
Castor Troy from Face/Off.
I know that's a strange choice, but I found him to be a fascinating character - and well played by both Nicholas Cage and John Travolta. I think perhaps the fact that they both played him in the same movie and made him so creepy is what makes me think of him as such a great villain.
