Today's Holidailies prompt: "What non-holiday song reminds you of winter or the holiday season, and why?"
The first song that popped into my head, of course, was Joni Mitchell's River. But I think that's a clear link, as it ends with instrumental Christmas music at the end. So after a bit of thought, I decided that the non-holiday song that reminds me most of the holidays is Simple Gifts, the old Shaker song. For the past... oh, at least 10 years, I have played in a brass choir at Christmas Eve mass, and one year, we decided to add a new song, a brass arrangement of Simple Gifts. I think we only played it the one year because there were so many beautiful Christmas songs we could be playing instead, but it has always been one of my favorite melodies, and I absolutely loved it as performed by a brass choir.
Even though I've moved half a country away, I am hoping to still play in the brass choir this year. It will be bittersweet, though, as the woman who initially organized us and then coordinated the event every year passed away this summer, rather suddenly. Last I heard, there were people trying to pull together the choir for at least one more year, kind of as a tribute to Mary and all she did for us. I truly hope it works out. If I were home, I would be trying to work to pull the group together. It's a wonderful evening and it's fun to get a chance to play. And I think Mary deserves our tribute.
This song is permanently stuck in my head. And the video's pretty fun too.
What's your musical horoscope? (Put your music player on shuffle and write down the first 10 songs that come up.) Inspired by Stephanie.
Dresden Dolls - Good Day
Armstrong & Ellington - It Don't Mean a Thing
Joseph and the... - Pharoah Story
Battlestar Galactica Soundtrack - The Shape of Things to Come
Aerosmith - I Don't Want To Miss A Thing
The Pointer Sisters - Jump (For My Love)
Bryan Adams - Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman (.... nope)
Bird York - In the Deep
R.E.M - Shiny Happy People
Grease - Greased Lightnin'
I'm not sure what that means. It started out so well, too.
What song or lyrics are stuck in your head at the moment? What album is it from?

My brain is alternating "You Don't Own Me" as performed in "First Wives' Club" and "Dance With Me Daily" by the Barra McNeils. No idea why.
What is your favorite cover song?
I'm a surprisingly big fan of cover songs. I can't explain it. Of course, my iPod is out in my car (possibly melting) so I'll have to do this off the top of my head. Some of my more recent favorites:
- Thea Gilmore - Crazy Love
- Jem - Maybe I'm Amazed
- Charlotte Martin - Wild Horses
- Allison Crowe - Hallelujah
I'm sure there's a whole slew of others that I'm just not coming up with right now.
Of course, I also hate when people destroy songs I love, such as Jessica Simpson's rendition of Angels. Ok, so it's not that bad, and I like the fact that it's in a key I can sing along to. But it's not great.
I will forever remain on the fence about Faith Hill's remake of Cry. Angie Aparo's version will always be my favorite, and Faith Hill does really take his version and copy it, but I think there's just something missing in her voice that he really manages to capture.
